Neato. The long diagonal line in the one on the right is actually a parallelogram with an area of one square unit

Yeah, you can cut up some real paper and do this, but the pieces don't line up perfectly. Like SyntaxError22 said: http://mathrules.ytmnd.com

WRONG!

LOGIC BOMB.

It's simply the law of similar triangles. 2/5 != 3/8.

Therefore the diagonal actually defines a tetrahedron with a surface area equal to 1.

Yeah I'm a nerd. DEAL!

The angles are ambiguous leading to what should be a gap in the second figure, though this is masked. The area of the individual shapes does not change, the area of an arrangement of those shapes can only be different if they include area not within those shapes.

## lotyrin

### Gregory

Make the first figure, and actually attempt to construct the second. Also, old.

Basically, the dotted lines are not straight lines.

## ricketson

### ricketson

Poor presentation of this brain-teaser. The obvious problem is that many of the measurements are not given...so there's no way to say that the shapes are the same in each image.

I've seen it with a grid in the background, which makes it much more convincing.

## gogodidi

### Thies

if you actually do the maths and try and find the areas of each individual component, then you will see that the middle of the line going through the entire diagram has a different slope from the rest of the line, only in this picture, which isn't in scale can the effect be seen..

## Aidiera

### Mat

I've see better examples.

### goin' to be a garbageman when I grow up

ahahahaha, go liberal arts degrees! But seriously folks, all this takes is photoshopping one shape to try to form the other, and we can see that it's actually wrong - things don't quite line up. Funny bullshit, however.

why did i stumble this after 15 thumbs down
