I'm going to take the "Read 52 Books in 52 Weeks" challenge by Brian Lee, creator and writer of Lifehack. I love to read. Clive Cussler is currently my favorite author.
I'm with Brian, "damn you, required reading lists!" I did, however discover a delightful book called "Harriet the Spy" when I was around 9 or 10, and found that I had inherited my mother's love of reading with that book. I haven't stopped reading since.
My mother told me stories about hiding from her mother so she could read. Sometimes she would grab an apple and climb a tree. Other times she might walk down by the stream and lay on the bank, way out of earshot of the house. She shouldn't have told me those stories. I don't think I ever would have come up with hiding out from her on my own, or developed that selective hearing problem!
Back to those required reading lists. I couldn't understand Shakespeare to save my soul, and Chaucer was, ugh!. I regret that I haven't read any of the classics, and while it may prove difficult to accomplish, a journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step, etc.
I've chosen books and authors that I've always been curious about, but never picked up, because of a current favorite author, or because my mother and I were exchanging current favorites. What a wonderful impact on my reading life my mother has been, truly! Thank you so much mom, you really are the best!

To maintain health, one must be sure to nourish the mind as well as the body. If reading is a favorite past time of yours I encourage you to continue. :)
