Well of course he justifying his own wealth accumulation. But he is also obviously woefully ignorant of the work of philanthropic organizations like the Gates Foundation. They don't "doll out cash" to the needy.
This writer clearly is also ignorant of the fact that most NGOs are focused on building institutions and programs that educate, empower and improve people's prospects so that they can raise themselves out of poverty, through learned skills and entrepreneurialism. There is still great poverty in the world, but over the past 50 years billions of people have been able to rise out of poverty with the assistance (a hand up, not a hand out) of organization like the Gates Foundation, the UN Development Program, USAID and thousands of small non-profits.
To claim that philanthropy doesn't help people is simply absurd. If it is done in the right way (not like welfare) it can have a multiplying effect on the economy.
