Nellie Bly was a very aggressive journalist who intentionally had herself committed into an insane asylum on Blackwell's Island{today's Roosevelt Island in NYC} in order to write an exposé on the poor condition of the asylum/poor treatment of the inmates.

I did rehab in a very old asylum in Clarinda, Iowa. That place was creepy as hell. It had been converted to a point, but you still got the jist of what happened there.
