The Elephant Sanctuary
The Elephant Sanctuary
They must be doing something right: The elephants seem to be living much longer than most others living in captivity. Very heart warming :)
They are friends
Famous elephant sanctuary in Tennessee.
What a wonderful place. The stories are very touching. I'm glad I found the site.
The Elephant Sanctuary in Hohenwald, Tennessee, is the nation's largest natural-habitat refuge developed specifically to meet the needs of endangered elephants. It is a non-profit organization, licensed by the U.S. Department of Agriculture and the Tennessee Wildlife Resources Agency, and accredited by the Association of Sanctuaries, designed specifically for old, sick or needy elephants who have been retired from zoos and circuses. Utilizing more than 2700 acres, it provides three separate and protected, natural-habitat environments for Asian and African elephants. Our residents are not required to perform or entertain for the public; instead, they are encouraged to live like elephants.
Interesting place. Might go soon.
If they harvested one of their elephants annually, they could make enough money to care for a few for a year. Imagine the high prices their meat would get on the exotic meat market, not to mention ivory and other small parts used in traditional chinese medicine.
Aww, I love the "meet the elephants" section ^-^
Could get there in a couple of hours. A very interesting place.
Elephant sanctuary in Tennessee.
I am really glad that I recently stumbled upon StumbleUpon! It has become my favorite site and one that is hard to leave once I get started. I was about to close out for the evening and The Elephant Sanctuary popped up! I have been a believer and supporter of the Sanctuary for several years. True that the Sanctuary does deal with sadness, and sometimes death, but the true tragedy would be if didn't exist. I was recently in that part of Tennessee on a dual sport motorcycling camping weekend and we were able to find the gated road. Just knowing I was right there (had a pic taken by their gate and mailbox!) soooooo made my day. My next step is getting on their waiting list...yes waiting list... for one of their volunteer weekends. Chances are pretty big that you won't see an elephant on a volunteer weekend but it would feel great to just know that you are doing something beneficial for a great bunch folks AND ELEPHANTS!! :~
Read about how the elephants came to retire at the sanctuary and how the caregivers devote their lives to these magnificent animals. It's good to know there are people like these in the world. Very encouraging!
Another great elephant charity/group, this one based in the US where retired elephants can go to live out their lives in peace. I will be donating to them once I have more $ as well. Great work, they do.
very sad stories here about the aging elephants and the abuse they suffered-if every stumbler sent them one dollar a year that would be awesome-the sanctuary operates on donations. These elephants gave us so much joy in circus acts that we all need to help them now.
Wonderful Elephant site great picture
