Although he has some valid points to make, you can't possibly base an argument against modern psychiatry by comparing it to the mistakes of 19th century practice, no more than you can discredit modern medicine by comparing it to blood letting. His whole argument is extremely biased, and the counter argument isn't even hard to see.
He argues it seeks to control people, through stigmatisation, whereas in actuality it is peoples perceptions of a named condition (which can be scientifically replicated, since it needs to be to reside in peer-reviewed journals!) which causes any stigmatism. He might say instead that being black, or being short, or being a woman is a stigmatism for the same reason.
