If all Stumblers gave a dollar every day between today and Jan. 1 (that’s $17), they’d make a college education possible for 25,200 students.

At StumbleUpon we like to propel people forward into new ideas with every click of the Stumble! button, whether that’s discovering a new recipe or a new point-of-view, or even just relaxing with an adorable animal video. We also like to move people forward to new possibilities and change the status quo. When we sat down to consider which charity to support during the holiday season this year, we saw Scholarship America as moving young people forward to new possibilities and fulfilling a very crucial need.

As we close out 2011, you’ll probably hear a lot of commentary about the still-sluggish American economy and jobs market. It’s important to remember that this picture is even bleaker for low income students struggling to make it to college: College graduates earn twice as much as high school graduates, but only 36% of low income students finish college (compared to 68% of middle to high income students). We’re starting off with a goal of $15,000, which would give 30 students emergency financial assistance, 20 students books for one year, or allow 15 students to attend college through a scholarship. StumbleUpon employees will be donating funds for the organization at our annual Holiday Party tonight to start things off!

We as a community can easily reach this goal, and we can even think bigger. In fact, if every Stumbler gave one dollar every day between December 15 and January 1 — a gift of just $17 per person — you’d make a college education possible for 25,200 students. Let’s make it happen!
